Thanks to Mikheil Saakashvili, the most vacuous term in present-day politics has now been completely emptied out. As Georgia callously used the Olympics to tighten their grip on South Ossetia, Saakashvili forgot that this might just incur the wrath of the Russians. And indeed, hostilities in and around South Ossetia have spiralled beyond anything Saakashvili had been gambling for.
Having killed 10 Russian peace-keepers (there by UN mandate) and countless South Ossetians (many of which Russian citizenship), he went on CNN (where else?) to ask his great master to help this 'freedom-loving' nation (it gets particularly vile from 8:10 onwards). 'Freedom-loving' has always been a meaningless, empty expression, but here the New York lawyer beautifully exposes it for what it is: shorthand for 'I love USA'. Sadly, there are weasels who parrot this line and spread their shameless propganda. Read this sad attempt at reliving the cold war on CiF.
In all of this, we must not forget that people are being killed, but such is the nature of 'freedom-loving'. What matters is where NATO is situated, where multinationals can thrive, where energy reserves and supplies are being controlled. Let's hope Saakashvili goes back to New York and leaves his US-fiefdom to the Georgian people.

Great post, olching. I love the line about 'freedom loving'. He wasn't so committed to 'freedom' when he was brutally cracking down on the opposition during the last elections, was he?

He's just not as good as disguising the freedom-loving mantra as others behind a facade. That's his downfall. It's quite ironic that this New York lawyer has not been able to make his 'case' as convincingly as one might expect. Alarm bells should be ringing whenever one hears 'freedom-loving'.
